When did you start an interest in rodeo?
The journey to becoming the World Champion Calf-Roper began
for me at the age of 5. I began competing in
rodeos in 1985 and became the Arizona Junior Rodeo champion
roper and All-Around Cowboy in 1986. Holding that title
for the next three years was only the beginning. The
next fifteen years included numerous awards and titles won
throughout my career, all of them preparing me, both in mind
and spirit, with one goal in mind. My goal is not just
to win the National Finals Rodeo Calf-Roping competition, but
to become a Champion of the sport, and an example of the
rewards of living life with purpose.
What other sports other than rodeo do you enjoy?
"football, I like to play basketball, but I like to watch
football"
What advice would you give to youth about rodeo or anything in general?
I'd say stay focused on what your goals are. Go to a
good roping clinic like mine or Mike Beer's
clinics.
What advice would you give to Indian youth who wanted to participate in rodeo but didn’t have the resources or support to get involved?
Find someone who will take time
to help you get started. Like a mentor who is Native or
knows the drawbacks of what it takes to become good a the
sport you want to get involved in. Just like any sport
you need to have a mentor and train to be really
good.
Are their any songs that inspire or pump you up before you ride or rope?
No not really
What would you like to see more of at Rodeos? I would like to see the crowds get bigger.
Need more folks in the crowds. the only way your going to get people to the rodeo to see the event, they need to be
educated about the events and rodeo.
What are/is your favorite western movie(s)? John Wayne and Doc Holiday.
What is your favorite music? I listen to everything. Not a big time rap fan, rocknroll,
I got to go to a George Strait concert, with Roy Cooper, I got to sit on stage while he performed.
Lately you will hear Uncle Cracker coming from my rig.....
What was your most memorable ride or run?
It would have been Laughlin back in 99, second round missed my first calf, second round was
tough, Fred was like 7.6 and there was a 7.3 I nodded my head and turned the calf around 7.7 I won 3rd in the second round, I left there to Oakdale and won, got be back and doing good.
Who is your all time hero? My Dad
What Cowboy has influenced you to rodeo? My father "Rick
LoPresto", as I was growing up, he was and will always be
my inspiration.
Would you like to thank sponsors and or anyone for your success in rodeo?
I would like to thank Soboba, Shellbird Rising heart ranches, Sands Chevrolet, (owner Jerry Moore) my vet Gary Kaufman
(Scottsdale)
Brian serves as a role model for all youth who want to be like
him. At last year's INFR, some parents commented on how
nice and helpful Brian was to their kids. If you needed
anything Brian was there to assist you. Indian Rodeo
News would like to thank Brian for taking the time to
interview with us.
Brian is currently seeking sponsorship for 2005. If you
would like to be represented by this champion PRCA Calf Roper
contact us and we'll put you in touch with him. Brian
traveled all summer in 2004 representing the Soboba Casino,
advertising their casino via his horse trailer. If you
were at Cheyenne, Pendleton, Prescott, and the other big shows
last year, Brian was there, and you can bet he and Possum made
the final round at each of these rodeos! We are
looking forward to seeing Brian back out on the road in
2005......indeed he is a future world champion......
