Native Youth
This is a brand new page added to Indian Rodeo
News. Our goal here is to recognize all Indian children and
teenagers who ride horses, rodeo, ranch, and kids who participate in
taking pictures at events.
Each month starting with December 2002 we will try
to feature a Indian Youth who is active in riding horses, rodeo,
ranching, and photography.
Do you know a
Native Indian Youth who has worked hard to achieve their goals and
accomplishments? Would you like to be featured as a Native Youth
role model? Any Native youth ages 18 and under can be
featured.
Indian Rodeo News asks for you to send in your story about yourself, who
inspired you to ride, rodeo, ranch, etc. We
welcome as many pictures you have to share with our readers. Email
your questions and or story to Gina@indianrodeonews.com

(If you travel with your Mom and Dad at rodeos or horse shows, cattle shows, or working the ranch, please explain what your responsibilities are) I traveled out West with my family to Rocky Boy, Ft. Hall and Crow Fair for the tour rodeos, and competed in the youth events. I have to help my mom and dad feed, water, my dogs and horses. At the rodeos I have to take care of my own tack and horse as well as keep my horses washed and brushed. At home we all work in the barns, I like to help with the new baby colts and fillies. My horse Shady Lady lost her little filly in hurricane Frances last year, it was really sad. This year I have a 4-H Steer named Blackie, right now he weighs 780 lbs. he has a lot of growing to do. I like to help my Papa Johns and my Papa Jumper when they work cows.
What achievements have you made in your event you compete in or activities you are involved in?
I was the E.I.R.A mutton busting champ in 2004, 2004 reserve champ in pee wee barrels. Bill Osceola Tribal Fair Champion Mutton Buster and Barrels 2004 (my dad and I won 2 saddles and buckles a piece.) Buckle winner at the Cybil Colliflower Memorial Rodeo in barrels 2005 at Rocky Boy. 2005 E.I.R.A. Pee wee Barrel Champ. 2005 Kid’s Series Jr. Barrel Champ. I can’t remember all of the rodeos names but I have 4 mutton busting buckles, 6 Barrel Racing Buckles , 1 calf riding buckle, and 2 saddles (one for mutton busting and one barrel).
What are your future goals in your events you participate in? Moving up from the kid’s events to the open rodeo and on to the I.N.F.R.. I might ride one more year in the jr’s but then Zoyie and I are going on up with the big girls. Zoyie has been to the I.N.F.R. a bunch of times with Miss Carol
Holyan.

If you could give advice to another Native youth on how to get started doing what you are involved with, what advice would you give them?
If your mom and dad or other family members are not into rodeo, go to one of the rodeos and ask questions. At all the rodeos I have ever been to I.N.F.R., N.F.R. and all locals, you can always talk to contestants, they always seem to have time. Check out what is going on in your area, ask a 4-H leader there are always horse and cattle shows in 4-H.
If you were granted one wish, what would it be? To ride like my Mom
What would you do to educate others about being a Native American Youth from your tribe?
Tell them about the Seminole Culture I know, but I am still learning.
