PBR News

August 10, 2004
Young Australian Brendon Clark notched his first BFTS title last night when he rode Salt River's Midnight Confessions for 91 points and rode Herrington's great little bull, Blueberry Wine for 92 points in the short go.Brendon is so full of personality that everyone was happy for him. After this win he returns to Australia for Troy Dunn's CT event.
There were three injuries during the event which gave fans and riders some concern. Adriano Moraes was injured when he and Smokeless Wardance made contact in the short go. Adriano suffered a broken jaw and cheekbone but says he will continue to ride. There is another five week break until the next BFTS event and hopefully the leader in the race for the World Championship will be healed by then. Also injured was TN's own Cory Rasch. Cory, who came in third in the event broke his nose and sprained his neck in the short go. I am hoping he ,too will be okay as Cory has really come to life lately and is riding great. He has severely sprained his neck before and I hope he can rest it for a while. He also has no intention of sitting out any events.. Brandon Berry suffered a hip pointer but he too is competing.
Michael Gaffney has taken to broadcasting like a duck to water. Michael's great personality shines here. Leah interviewed Birthday boy Justin McBride and when she asked him what would be a present he could give himself , Justin answered:" My present for me tonight would be to win this event." Justin went on to say he's spent time fishing and relaxing during the break and knows he has to really concentrate on his riding now.
Tuff picked our guy Wiley Petersen to ride Wild Bill. I agree here. He picked Rooster over Gilbert Carrillo and I also agree with that. Rooster just does not fit Gilbert or many others. Tuff picked Ross Coleman over Alligator and I agree here too. Ross is a hot hotey!Unfortunately for Tony Mendes he drew Dippin' Famous and Tuff took the bull. So do I because this is one nasty character. As Tuff said:"I just hope he doesn't get his lips ripped off. This is a dangerous bull."
He picked Matt Bohon ove Blue Jack and expects a good ride.I agree here too.
Leah did a helium voice break lead in.Only leah would do that! She is great.
Chris Shivers was the first ride shown though both Greg Potter and Cauy Hudson had ridden prior to the shown rides.Potter rode Jeopardy for 87.5 and finished 6th while the bull score 44. Cauy Hudson had the option of a reride after scoring 76 on Johnn's Sports Coats. The bull only scored 36.Cauy was 12th in 12 qualified rides in the long go.
Chris Shivers and Tombstone didn't get along.Tombstone took two leaps out and made a sharp turn to the right away from Chris's hand.he got Chris out of shape the first leap out.Bull score:46.
Wiley Petersen had an awful trip on Wild Bill.Guess we were wrong about this one.Wild Bill just didn't have it as he faked left and faked right and got Wiley stretched out and off at 3.2.Bull score:43.5
B.J.Kramps made a great ride on Black Jack but an ugly dismount into the boards ,breaking pieces off of a sign. He's ok.Bull spun to the right away from B.J's hand then reversed. He scored 86 and finished 7th.Bull score:43.
Cory Rasch drew Terry Williams's Grey Cat.The bull spun right into Cory's hand then reversed and Cory nearly came off down into the well but corrected himself. He came off at the whistle to the left and hung up.He got hit in the face and slapped around before the bullfighters got him loose.Cory suffered a broken noce and sprained neck but scored 89.5 and finished second in the round. He was unable to ride in the short go but still held on to third place in the average.Bull score:45.5
They asked Jim Sharp is he still gets nervous before rides and Jim answered:"I get nervous everytime I get on.If you don't get nervous getting on a 2000 pound bull something is wrong."Jim drew Anaconda who leaped out straight and pulled Jim forward causing Raze to slap him. This bull has power and scored 43.5.
Paolo Crimber drew Public Enemy who took two leaps forward then 4 spins to the left away from Paolo's hand.Paolo seemed to get stiff about then and stretched back and he was off. Bull score:43.
Gilbert Carrillo and Rooster ended up just as Tuff predicted. The bull took a strong leap forward and Gilbert was off at 1.6.Bull score:45.5
Foul Play fouled the night for Justin McBride as he went to the left , away from Justin's hand and when he stepped out of it Justin hit the dirt.Bull score:44.
Cody Whitney was limping from last night when he got on Gator.Gator took three leaps straight out then 1.5 spins to the left and Cody came down onto both feet and crawled out.He was smiling when he straightened up and he's ok.Bull score:39.5
Bam Bam was small for Sean Willingham. The bull took a leap straight out and faked to the left and got Sean out of position and off.Bull score: 42.5
When Brett Haber asked Adriano if he thought himself one of the greatest bull riders ,Adriano said he thinks so and tha this career is not over yet so he just may end up the greatest. He also admitted he is thrilled to have both ofhis brothers riding with him.He was the first Brazilian to come here ,the first Brazilian to win a World Championship here and now part of the first three brother team to ride here.
Adriano made a great ride on King's Court. The bull barely cleared the chute when he turned back sharply to the left then reversed to the right then reversed again as Adriano spurred.he scored 88.5 and tied for 4/5 in the round while the bull scored 44.
Jared Farley made a good ride on Guns A Smokin for 86. He spurred while the bull spun into his hand. He finished tied 8/9 in the round .Bull score:42.
Brendon Clark made a great ride on Midnight Confessions. The bull went to the left , away from Brendon's hand with lots of speed and action.Brendon remained in complete control and the fans and judges loved it.Brendon scored 91 and was the round winner.Bull score:45.
Ross Coleman was nexton Alligator.Michael Gaffney predicted"This is going to be a day off for Ross." Both Tuff and Michael are very high on Ross and his abilities; as are so many others who know this great guy .Ross made an incredible recovery when he was nearly bucked off early into the ride .He was at a 45 degree angle on th eleft side and managed to pull himself back into the center..He scored 85 finished tied for 10/11 in the round; and had him 173 on two.Bull score:42.5
Rob Bell followed with a great ride of his own on ShakeDown. The bull took one leap out of the box then spun right while Rob did a lot of spurring. He scored 88.5, finishing tied for 4/5 in the round while the bull scored 44.
Jody Newberry was asked if he felt prepared physically and replied"I'm probably not prepared at all.I don't work out."Sounds like another rider we all know and love-Tuff Hedeman has said many times he never worked out and look how great he was when he rode!Go for it Jody! Jody made a really strong ride on Fire Ant.The bull threw everything at him as he made 5.5 spins to the left away from Jody's hand then went forward , then reversed. And here was a small bull and a tall guy! Jody scored 86 and tied for 8/9 in the round.Bull score:43.It was so good to see Ross Johnson make a good ride on Johnny Reb who spun to the left away from Ross's hand then reversed the spin then faked right and faked left.Ross scored 85 and tied for 10/11 with Ross Coleman.Bull score:41.5
Tuff hit the nail on the head again with Tony Mendes' ride on Dippin famous. The big, strong bull took 4 jumps striaght forward thentook a half turn to the left then right and got Tony stretched back.No real timing.I don't likethis bull.Tuff said after the ride:"Everyone wishes Scotty Lovelace would just take him(the bull) home and turn him out. That's the place for him."
Adam Carrillo got stretched back too far on his arm by French Fry, a big and tough bull who took two leaps forward then spun away from Adam's hand. Bull score:44
Matt Bohon did just as I thought and Tuff predicted as he made a great looking ride on Blue Jack.I like this bull.He spun to the right into Matt's hand and had lots of action but no dirty tricks.Matt made a picture perfect ride with good spur and free arm action,. Both Tuff and Michael agreed that both the bull and the rider are future stars.Matt finished 3rd in the round.Bull score:44.
Owen Washburn lost his Enterprise bonus when he opted for a reride after UhOh hipped himself twice on the panels and gates. His reride was on Dobber who spun to the left into his hand and Owen came off of him unexpectedly.Bull score:44.5
These were the only rides I had information on but I can tell you that there were no other qualified rides in round two.
After the second round Tuff did a profile on Slim Shady who Tuff called "Just awesome."According to Tuff Slim Shady is one of the top three bulls in the PBR in his opinion and highly underrated.
In the short go Jody Newberry was the first rider up on on eof my favorites-Jack Daniels Happy Hour who took one jump forward then turned to the left away from Jody's hand with a leap and Jody came off down into the well.Bull score:45.5
B.J.Kramps drew Silver Select and he looked like he had a really good rid egoing for him as the bull spun into his hand but BJ bucked off at 6.4 when he lost hold with his outer foot. Bull score:44.5Chris Shivers over rode Western Wishes who spun to the left into Chris's hand. When Chris began to spur he lost his foot and came down.Bull score:45.
Zack Brown came down early after Slim Shady took 4 jumps away from Zack's hand and then reversed.Bull score:45.5
Rob Bell topped Uncle Charlie for 91 points in an incredible ride. The bull faked to the left then to the right into Rob's hand and then backed up while bucking but Rob rode him move for move.Rob scored 179.5 Justin McBride should have had a good draw for himself as he had Slick Willy who went to the left away from Justin's hand in a good spin with kick and elevation but Justin rolled off of him at 7 seconds.Bull score:45.
And then came a wreck we sure didn't need.Adriano Moraes had a good ride going on Smokeless Wardance till the bull jerked Adriano down and made contact with his right horn and Adriano's face twice. He got Adriano right below the left eye and in the jaw.Adriano had a broken left cheekbone and jaw.But Adriano has five weeks till the next event and Adriano has said he will not miss an event.Bull score:46.5
Matt Bohon drew PFI Crankshaft who jumped out and faked left then went forward.Matt scored 79 with an option for a reride which he took on Bo Time who took two spins to the right into his hand and then reversed sharply bucking Matt off.Bull score:46.Luke Snyder's ride on Crossfire Hurricane was not shown but Luke bucked off and the bull scored 46.5
AdamCarrillo was off of Pandora's Box almost immediatelyMichael Gaffney said:"This bull doesn't fit anybody."The jumped out and turned to the right with too much power for Adam.Bull score:46.5
Brendon Clark made a great ride on the bull everyone loves-Herrington's Blueberry Wine.AS the bull spun to the right Brendon spurred and stayed centered. He scored 92 points and the bull scored 45.5.
Kid Rock got Cauy Hudson down early when he spun to the right away from Cauy's hand.Bull score:45.
Dippin Soldier put the stop to Jared Farley's streakThe bull went two jumps out straight then spun to the right away from Jared's handBull score:46.
Ross Coleman drew Mossy Oak Mudslinger and got too far inside the spin.Bull score:45
Greg Potter came right down off of High Tideas the bull took one leap out and then took a sharp right turn.
Leah interviewed the event champion,a very happy Brendon Clark. When she asked how it felt to get his firs twin he said"It's a great Feeling." He went on to tell how Tuff encouraged him before the ride.
OLN has a show about the 25 most courageous people .Tuff Hedeman was dubbed the toughest cowboy to ever ride a bull.As Leah called it-an alpha male on an alpha bull.- a great combination.Tuff said about bull riding"Its not for the weak of heart."OLN said of Tuff that there is no greater Alpha male in bull riding than Tuff Hedeman.
They showed Tuff's rides and his wrecks.I agree with them that he is the best bull rider to ever come down the pike !He was number 23 on the courage countdown. People ranged from Tuff to a surfer who lost her arm to a Tiger shark to the men who made the emergency dog sled run in 1925 to Nome ,Alaska carrying serum against diptheria to the conquerors of Mt.Everest to mountain bike stars as Lance Armstrong who beat cancer to win the Tour 6 times.Catch this show if you can. Many incredible stories .
My heart sure was in my mouth reliving those wrecks that Tuff had. And the way he came back from them, ever stronger. The man is incredible! Some fans on the PBR's forum suggested he run for President of the US!
Tandy Freeman was on the show too.And Leah also did commentary on several other segments. And if you get a chance to see Leah's new exercise videos during a hotel stay , buy them.Leah has put together a great series of videos for people who are travelling. I sure hope the major networks invite her to appear on shows as Leno,Allie and Jack, Today, etc. This is one talented lady.Don't forget -OLN will broadcast the recent CT event from Utah next Saturday.
