Indian Rodeo Queens

Miss Choctaw Nation All Indian Rodeo Association Queen 2003

Malinda Thompson

Malinda is 18 years old and currently a Senior at Hugo High School.  She is the vice president of the Hugo FFA Chapter.   She shows Maine-Anjou cattle and Swine.  to learn more about this breed of cattle click on the name of the breed above

Malinda has been riding horses since she was little, she enjoys playing Softball and showing horses.  One of her goals is to become a pro at showing cutting horses.

 Malinda owns 4 horses:
Her Appaloosa named "Freckles,"  Sorrel-White Paint named "Choctaw Bailey", Palomino named "Tonto", and a Buckskin horse named "Brit".

Choctaw Bailey: Was given to Malinda on her 17th birthday, as a gift from the late Randy Bailey.   Randy had passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack and was always there for Malinda at her shows and events.  Malinda describes Choctaw as a very friendly and special horse to her.   One day last year, he showed signs of colic and then a hour or two later they found him laying down.  So he was walked and walked and then placed in one of Malinda's calf pens, then they took him to Paris Texas the next morning, after finding out that his colic was getting worse, they ended up by hauling him to the Las Colinas vet clinic in Dallas after they got a referral from Dr. Kraft.
Choctaw recovered after surgery was performed on him.

Her other pets are a German Rotweiler dog named "Lucky",  two Beagle dogs, both are called "Beagle" and a Blue Heeler named "George" who is the ranch working dog. She also owns a Cockatiel bird named "Scooter".

Malinda is a former Hugo PRCA rodeo queen, where she was judged on Speech and her riding ability.  We asked her what questions she was asked and what did she have to do when being judged on her riding ability and if she had to ride a unfamiliar horse or was able to ride her own horse, she replied:

"I was asked to describe the Justin Crisis Fund in 3 minutes, then they had me ride like I was in a Western Pleasure class, and I rode my friend's horse because my Palomino had a type of cancer and my other horses were to young to ride at that time"

When Malinda competed for the CNIRA 2002-2003 queen title, the contest detailed in selling tickets, the girl who sold the most tickets became Miss CNIRA

Malinda's advice to any girl who wants to become successful at showing livestock, horses, and becoming a princess or rodeo queen is "To set your mind to what you want.  Don't let any stereo typing get in your way, be yourself and proud of who you are, as long as you have your family-that is all you need".

We asked Malinda what are her goals, and where does she see herself in 5 years from now:

"In 5 years, I will be completing my college education, finding myself a good job, and owning lots of land, with lots of cows and horses, and having a family"

Indian Rodeo News would like to thank Malinda for taking the time to interview with us.  We hope her experience will inspire other young women to get involved with horses, cattle, and animal care.  And not to be shy from competing for a princess or queen title.
