Champion Bates, Jr. leads The All Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association
WINDOW ROCK, AZ - At the beginning of the All Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association’s (AIRCA) 51st year, former Indian world champion Ben Bates, Jr. of Mexican Springs, New Mexico was recently elected to succeed SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT John Boyd, Jr. as the AIRCA President. Bates, who is also an active member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), having earned the right to compete at the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo from the Turquoise Circuit in 2000, will serve as President of AIRCA for the next two years.
Bates said, “I really enjoy the sport of rodeo that I say I will continue to rodeo so long as I can still climb into the saddle. For AIRCA I would like to do all I can during my administration to provide a viable venue for the AIRCA members to raise their knowledge, skills and ability to enable themselves to successfully compete at the next level. I like to see more of our Native American cowboys/girls compete as high as they can in the sport of rodeo while they put the Navajo Nation on the map time and time again.” Bates is no stranger to speaking his hopes for the younger generation because he has “been there and done that”.
Forty-eight-year old Bates filled his permit to compete in the PRCA in 1989 after competing in the AIRCA since he was 20 years old. During his participation in the Indian rodeos with the AIRCA and other associations, he earned the season championship many times, culminating in the steer wrestling Indian world championship in 1998. Bates also qualified to the PRCA Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo 16 times further earning the opportunity to dance among the best at the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo. DNCFR invites the season event champions and circuit finals champions from 12 circuits throughout the United States usually in March of each year to Pocatello, Idaho.
Coming from a historical environment of an extended family who has involved themselves in rodeo, Bates said, “My family has been involved from the start of AIRCA, the oldest organized rodeo association in Indian country. My Uncle Francis Bates and father Ben Bates, Sr. both served on the AIRCA Board of Directors back then.” He continued, “My mother Ruth C. Bates provided the support necessary for the leaders to lead the association and I know my family consisting of my wife Beverly and daughter Sunni Raye are there to do the same. I feel I am ready to lead the A-team, the core group that is charged in making every effort to lead AIRCA to even greater heights.”
While the AIRCA team is still being appointed by President Bates, some of the A-Team members for 2008-2009 are Vice-President Tom Boyd, Administrative Secretary Murlee Hollowhorn, Treasurer Brenda Holgate, Public Relations Officer Beverly J. Coho, Central Entry Secretary Wanda Francisco, and Judges Coordinator Al Slivers. The Board of Directors are Harrison Charley (Steer Wrestling), Robert Burbank (Saddle Bronc), Michele Morris (Ladies’ Breakaway Roping), Jerome Pete Sr. (Senior Breakaway Roping), Leonard Williams Sr. and Robert Largo (Open and #12 Team Roping), Harry Smith Jr. (Bull Riding), and Bobbie Clawson (Junior Barrel Racing).
Bates concluded by inviting all interested rodeo sponsors, judges and timers to the AIRCA Winter meeting scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, February 23-24, 2008 at the Navajo Nation Quality Inn, Window Rock, AZ beginning at 8:00 a.m. each day. Bates reassures the public, “I look forward to continuing the strong relationship we have with our fans, our rodeo and business sponsors and contract personnel. We plan to continue the rodeo tradition that makes you happy and thank you for the role you play in its success. Join us.” ####
